Commercial Boom Gate & Access Control Installation in Austral NSW: A Complete Integrated System

Commercial access control involves much more than installing an automatic boom gate.

A well-designed entrance needs to consider how authorised users enter, how visitors request access, how vehicles exit, how safety devices respond and how every component communicates with the automation system.

For this commercial project in Austral NSW 2179, the solution combined a Beninca automatic boom gate with vehicle detection, safety equipment and an Akuvox GSM video intercom and access control system.

The objective was to create a reliable and user-friendly vehicle access system where the individual components operated together as one coordinated solution.

The Project Requirements

The site required a controlled vehicle entrance capable of handling several different access scenarios.

The system needed to provide:

  • Controlled vehicle entry

  • Visitor communication

  • Credential-based access for authorised users

  • Automatic vehicle exit

  • Vehicle and pedestrian detection

  • Improved boom-arm visibility

  • Remote access capability

  • Indoor monitoring

  • Reliable connectivity

Rather than treating each requirement as a separate installation, the system was designed around the complete vehicle access sequence.

Beninca EVA5 Automatic Boom Gate

At the centre of the system is a Beninca EVA5 automatic boom gate.

The 24VDC electromechanical barrier is designed for intensive-use applications and incorporates an integrated control system.

A five-metre aluminium boom arm provides the physical vehicle barrier across the entrance.

Reflective safety markings improve visibility, while the boom arm length can be configured according to the required driveway opening.

LED Illuminated Boom Arm for Better Visibility

The boom arm also incorporates yellow LED illumination.

Visibility becomes particularly important around commercial entrances operating during different lighting conditions.

The illuminated arm makes the physical barrier easier for approaching drivers to identify during both daytime and night-time operation.

This is particularly useful at busy vehicle entrances where the boom gate forms part of the site's traffic-control system.

Vehicle-Height Intercom Bollard

Access equipment needs to be positioned around the people who actually use it.

For this installation, a vehicle-height intercom bollard was incorporated into the entrance.

The positioning allows drivers to interact with the access-control system without unnecessarily leaving their vehicles.

The bollard was securely installed and aligned with the access-control equipment to provide a practical interface for visitors approaching the property.

Akuvox GSM Video Intercom & Access Control

Visitor access was integrated using an Akuvox SIP video door station.

The system provides video calling together with credential-based access functionality.

When a visitor arrives, they can initiate a video call from the entrance.

Authorised personnel can then:

  • See the visitor

  • Communicate with them

  • Determine whether access should be granted

  • Release the gate remotely when appropriate

This provides a more controlled visitor-entry process than relying solely on traditional gate remotes.

Swipe Cards and Fobs for Authorised Users

Regular users don't necessarily need to contact someone every time they arrive.

The access-control system therefore includes programmed credentials for authorised users.

Approximately 35 access fobs were included as part of the system setup.

This allows staff or other approved users to access the site using their assigned credentials while visitor access remains controlled separately through the intercom.

This distinction is important in commercial access-control design because different users often require different methods of entry.

4G Connectivity

The system also incorporates a 4G industrial router to provide reliable communication for the connected access-control equipment.

Supporting infrastructure included power, networking and a weatherproof enclosure.

Connectivity is an important consideration for modern GSM and IP-based access-control systems because remote communication depends on reliable network availability.

Indoor Touchscreen Monitoring

An Akuvox indoor touchscreen monitor was also incorporated into the system.

This provides personnel inside the property with a convenient interface for visitor communication and access management.

Combined with mobile access capability, this provides greater flexibility in how incoming visitors are handled.

Automatic Exit Using Radar Vehicle Detection

Entry and exit don't necessarily need to operate in the same way.

Entry requires controlled authorisation.

Exit can often be automated.

For this project, a radar vehicle detection sensor was incorporated into the exit side of the system.

As an authorised vehicle approaches from within the property, the radar detects its presence and triggers the required boom gate exit operation.

The driver therefore doesn't need to:

  • Use a remote

  • Swipe a card

  • Present a fob

  • Contact the intercom

This creates a smoother exit process while maintaining controlled entry from outside the property.

Why Separate Entry and Exit Logic Matters

This project demonstrates an important principle of commercial access control.

Entry and exit serve different purposes.

On entry, the system needs to establish whether the user or visitor is authorised.

On exit, the objective may simply be to recognise a vehicle approaching from within the secured property and provide efficient egress.

The operating sequence can therefore be simplified as:

ENTRY:
Visitor or credential → Authorisation → Boom gate opens → Vehicle enters

EXIT:
Vehicle detected → Automatic exit command → Boom gate opens → Vehicle exits

Designing these sequences correctly improves both security and traffic flow.

Photoelectric Safety Beam

Vehicle access automation also requires appropriate safety devices.

A photoelectric safety beam was incorporated into the boom gate operating area.

The beam provides an input to the automation system when its detection path is interrupted.

Correct positioning, alignment and configuration are important because safety devices need to interact correctly with the boom gate's operating logic.

The complete system was tested during commissioning rather than simply confirming that the boom gate could open and close.

Commissioning the Complete System

Commissioning an integrated access-control installation involves more than operating the boom gate once.

The works included:

  • Installation and wiring

  • Access-control integration

  • System setup

  • Programming

  • Operating parameter adjustment

  • Safety-device testing

  • Vehicle detection testing

  • Access credential configuration

  • Intercom functionality testing
