How Access Control Can Be Integrated With a Commercial Boom Gate: Camden Valley Inn Case Study
A boom gate is often considered a simple physical barrier.
A vehicle approaches, someone presses a remote or enters a code, and the barrier opens.
For many commercial properties, however, controlling vehicle access requires something more sophisticated.
Hotels are a good example.
A hotel may need to allow convenient vehicle access for current guests while discouraging unauthorised vehicles from using parking spaces intended for paying customers.
At Camden Valley Inn in NSW, this requirement was addressed by integrating a commercial boom gate with a number plate recognition access-control system.
Instead of relying entirely on remotes, cards or manual operation, authorised guest vehicles could be recognised by their registration number and granted access during the relevant authorised period.
The project demonstrates how a commercial boom gate can become one component of a much broader vehicle-access solution.
The Access-Control Requirement
The objective was not simply:
Install a boom gate.
The operational requirement was:
Control who can enter the parking area while allowing legitimate hotel guests convenient access during their stay.
This distinction is important.
A barrier can physically restrict access, but the access-control system determines who should be allowed through it.
For a hotel, the list of authorised users continually changes.
Guests:
arrive;
check in;
stay for a defined period; and
eventually check out.
A permanent access remote for every temporary hotel guest would not necessarily be the most practical way to manage this type of environment.
Number plate recognition offered another approach.
What Is Number Plate Recognition Access Control?
Automatic Number Plate Recognition — often referred to as ANPR or LPR, Licence Plate Recognition — uses a camera and associated software to identify a vehicle's registration plate.
The registration can then be compared against an authorised database or access list.
In a boom-gate application, the basic sequence can be:
Vehicle approaches → number plate is read → registration is checked → access is authorised → boom gate receives an opening command
If the vehicle is not authorised, the automatic opening command is not issued through that access pathway.
The exact access rules depend on how the system has been configured for the particular property.
How the Camden Valley Inn System Works
For this project, the concept was designed around temporary hotel guest access.
A guest's vehicle registration can be authorised for the relevant period of their stay.
When that vehicle approaches the controlled entrance:
1. The Number Plate Is Read
The recognition system detects the approaching vehicle and identifies its registration plate.
2. The Registration Is Checked
The plate is compared against the authorised access information.
3. Access Is Granted
Where the registration has valid authorisation, the access-control system provides the appropriate opening command to the boom gate.
4. The Boom Gate Opens
The vehicle can enter the controlled parking area.
5. Access Can Later Be Removed
After the guest's authorised period has finished, the registration no longer needs to remain active.
This means access can be connected to the guest's stay rather than requiring permanent physical credentials.
Why This Makes Sense for a Hotel
Hotels have a different vehicle-access requirement from many offices, factories or residential properties.
The authorised users change regularly.
A hotel may also want to protect parking spaces for:
Current guests
Staff
Approved visitors
Deliveries
Other authorised vehicles
Without some form of controlled entry, parking may potentially be used by vehicles that have no connection with the property.
An integrated boom gate and number plate recognition system provides a method of managing that boundary.
Reducing Dependence on Physical Credentials
Traditional access control often relies on:

Each of these technologies has appropriate applications.
However, temporary hotel guests create an administrative challenge.
A physical credential may need to be:
issued → explained → collected → reprogrammed or cancelled
A vehicle registration already provides a unique identifier associated with the vehicle arriving at the property.
For suitable sites, number plate recognition can therefore reduce the need to issue a separate physical credential to every vehicle.
The Boom Gate Is Only One Part of the System
One of the important lessons from commercial access-control projects is that the boom gate itself is not the complete solution.
The barrier provides the physical control point.
The access-control system determines whether an opening request should be generated.
The complete installation may involve several systems working together:
Number plate reader → Access-control logic → Boom gate controller → Barrier arm → Safety system → Vehicle detection
Each component has a different role.
Access Control vs Vehicle Safety
This distinction is particularly important.
A number plate reader may determine:
“This vehicle is authorised to enter.”
But that does not mean the number plate recognition system alone should provide all of the safety functions required around the moving boom arm.
Depending on the installation, separate devices can be used for functions such as:

Safety-beam protection
Exit detection
Preventing inappropriate closing while a vehicle is within a monitored area

Installing an ANPR camera beside a boom gate does not automatically create a reliable integrated access system.

What happens if the plate cannot be read?
How is visitor access handled?
How are temporary registrations entered?
How is access removed?
What happens during a power or network problem?
How does a vehicle exit?
How are safety devices integrated?
Is manual operation available where required?

Access-control technology should be selected around the actual operating requirement of the property.
A keypad may be excellent for one site.
A remote may be appropriate for another.
An intercom may be essential where visitors need to communicate with reception.
A staff car park may benefit from cards or fobs.
A hotel may benefit from number plate recognition because vehicle access changes as guests arrive and depart.
In some commercial sites, several methods may be integrated into the same overall access system.
